The First-Time Chew Rule

Any time you introduce a new chew type — new protein, new texture, new product — treat it as a trial. Even if you've been giving bully sticks for years, a new brand or a new type of chew deserves the same careful introduction.

Step-by-Step Introduction Protocol

Choose a quiet time: Introduce new chews when your dog is calm and relaxed, not immediately after intense exercise or during stressful periods.
Supervise completely: The first chew session should be watched from start to finish. Observe how your dog chews — are they taking appropriate bites or trying to swallow large pieces?
Limit the first session: 10-15 minutes maximum. Remove the chew after this time regardless of whether your dog is finished.
