How to Store Bully Sticks: Keep Them Fresh and Safe
You've invested in quality bully sticks — now make sure they stay fresh and safe between chew sessions. Proper storage extends the life of your bully sticks, prevents bacterial growth, and maintains the flavor your dog loves.
Why Storage Matters
Bully sticks are a dried meat product. Like any meat-based treat, they can grow bacteria, mold, and go rancid if stored improperly. High humidity, heat, and exposure to air are the main enemies.
Best Storage Options
Airtight Container
The best option for long-term storage is an airtight glass or BPA-free plastic container. This prevents moisture absorption and air exposure that can lead to mold growth.
Refrigerator
Partially chewed bully sticks should always be refrigerated between sessions. The moisture from your dog's saliva makes them more susceptible to bacterial growth at room temperature.
Freezer
For bulk purchases, the freezer is ideal. Bully sticks can be stored frozen for up to a year without any loss of quality. Simply thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes before giving to your dog.
What to Avoid
- Plastic bags without sealing: Allows air and humidity in
- Direct sunlight: Heat degrades the product and can cause rancidity
- Near the stove or heat sources: Same issue as sunlight
- Humid environments: Bathrooms, basements — humidity causes mold
Signs a Bully Stick Has Gone Bad
- Visible mold (white, green, or black spots)
- Slimy texture
- Strong rancid smell (different from the normal beef smell)
- Unusual discoloration
If in doubt, throw it out. Your dog's health is worth more than a bully stick.
How Long Do Bully Sticks Last?
- Unopened, room temperature: Up to 3 years if stored properly
- Opened, room temperature: 6-12 months in an airtight container
- Partially chewed, refrigerated: Up to 1 week
- Frozen: Up to 1 year
